Gee Whiz: It’s All About Pee

I was thrilled to see Susan Goodman follow up her classic The Truth About Poop with Gee Whiz! It’s All About Pee. -Kathleen Baxter, School Library Journal

Did you know that Civil War belles collected their pee in barrels so soldiers could make gunpowder?  Or, that lobsters fight by squirting each other with urine from bladders next to their eyes?  How about the doctors in ancient Greece who used to treat insanity by making their patients drink donkey urine.  As you can see, there’s a lot more to learn about pee than you ever imagined.

Here is the first sketch that the wonderful Elwood H. Smith submitted for the page in Gee Whiz about using a bathroom in space.  (Just think, regular toilets rely on gravity.) The sketch is hilarious, but ultimately we decided against a drawing that used a normal toilet in space and having the ship fly so low that a bear could get bunked.  Comic illustrations can have lots of exaggerations, but we didn’t want to give kids the wrong impression about the facts.  So the picture that actually appeared in the book is the one below.
